2023 Golden Horse Master Class Lineup Announcement

Along with the masterminds behind Parasite, Monster and Westworld

 

For the sixth year in a row, the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee collaborates with the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development, MOC, with the support of PEGATRON Corporation to deliver the Golden Horse Master Class. In the year of the 60th Golden Horse Awards, the splendid lineup of heavyweight filmmakers includes KITANO Takeshi (Golden Lion Award and Best Director winner at Venice), LEE Chang-dong (Best Screenplay at Cannes and Best Director at Venice), TRAN Anh Hung (Golden Lion Award winner and Best Director at Cannes), YAKUSHO Koji (Best Actor at Cannes), award-winning actors TSUMABUKI Satoshi and MITSUSHIMA Hikari; multiple Emmy Awards nominees Lisa JOY and Jonathan NOLAN (Westworld), renowned producer KAWAMURA Genki (Your Name., Mirai), two-time Golden-Horse-Awards-winning musician Peyman YAZDANIAN (Spring Fever, Mystery), and experts from Academy Award Best Picture Parasite, sound supervisor Ralph CHOI Tae-young and colorist Kevin KANG.

 

This edition of Master Class will be headed by esteemed Asian directors: legendary Japanese director KITANO Takeshi is a festival veteran, three times in Cannes competition and six times in Venice, winning Golden Lion Award and Best Director Silver Lion Award with Fireworks and The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi, respectively. In addition to writing, directing, acting and editing, KITANO is also an excellent host, writer and painter. LEE Chang-dong has directed merely six feature films so far, yet each delivers great depth and influence on world cinema. Oasis won him the Best Director Silver Lion at Venice, and Poetry was awarded Best Screenplay at Cannes. French-Vietnamese director TRAN Anh Hung’s debut feature The Scent of Green Papaya won the Golden Camera at Cannes and was nominated Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards, followed by Cyclo winning the Golden Lion Award at Venice. TRAN’s latest work The Taste of Things crowned him the Best Director at Cannes.

 

For the acting field, a star-studded list enriches the lineup: YAKUSHO Koji is known for his precise, diverse performances, with a record of 23 nominations in Japan Academy Film Prize and Shall We Dance? winning five major Best Leading Actor awards in Japan; this year, Perfect Days leads him to the Best Actor at Cannes. Much-loved TSUMABUKI Satoshi snatched Best New Performer at Japan Academy Film Prize with his debut feature Waterboys, and went on winning two Best Leading Actor with Villain and A Man, as well as one Best Supporting Actor with Rage to complete the grand slam. Praised as the natural-born actress, MITSUSHIMA Hikari won the Best Actress at Japanese Movie Critics Awards with Life and Death on the Shore, along with multiple accolades. MITSUSHIMA also appears in beloved series like First Love and Quartet and is selected by Kinema Junpo into the list of Top 100 Japanese Actress of All Time.

 

Lisa JOY is the co-creator, co-showrunner, executive producer and episodic director of HBO's Westworld, which has 54 Emmy Award nominations, winning 9 of them. JOY made her feature length directorial debut with the Warner Bros. film Reminiscence that she also wrote. Jonathan NOLAN is an Academy Award and Emmy Award-nominated writer, director, and producer. NOLAN’s work includes Memento, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Westworld, which he co-created with JOY. In 2011, JOY and NOLAN co-founded their award-winning production company Kilter Films that has produced Westworld, The Peripheral, and the highly anticipated upcoming television series Fallout. All-rounded producer KAWAMURA Genki has fostered the blockbuster Your Name. by SHINKAI Makoto and pushed Mirai by HOSODA Mamoru into the Academy Awards; the latest production Monster also won the Best Screenplay at Cannes. KAWAMURA will detail how he collaborates with KORE-EDA Hirokazu, SAKAMOTO Yuji and many more.

 

Iranian musician Peyman YAZDANIAN has composed for The Wind Will Carry Us by Abbas KIAROSTAMI, Summer Palace, Spring Fever and Mystery by LOU Ye, winning Golden Horse Awards Best Original Film Score for the latter two, respectively, and also worked with established directors like Jafar PANAHI and Asghar FARHADI. Peyman will demonstrate how music could subtly stir the emotion and bring about the poetry of images, interweaving the possible divergent artistic interpretation between musicians and directors. Veteran sound supervisor Ralph CHOI Tae-young has 15 Grand Bell Awards nominations under his belt, winning three of them, and won the Golden Reel Award for Foreign Language Feature Film at the Motion Picture Sound Editors for his achievement in Parasite. CHOI also oversees the sounds of global phenomenal series Squid Game and Moving. He will decipher the process of how K-sound climbs up to the world stage. Kevin KANG, one of the chief colorists in Korea and currently Director of Production Technology and Operations for Netflix in the APAC region, has fine tuned noted Korean movies like Parasite, Burning and Train to Busan. KANG will bring a customized workshop specialized in the leading coloring techniques of HDR for Taiwanese filmmakers.

 

Golden Horse Master Class will be held from November 18th through 24th at the Event Space of Taipei New Horizon. Registration will be open to active filmmakers, film professionals and students/faculty of film-related departments, starting at 1PM, October 19th on Golden Horse website.
