2022 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival announces this year’s Opening Film Coo-Coo 043 and Closing Film Marry My Dead Body. Coo-Coo 043 is helmed by director Chan Ching-lin (The Island that All Flow By) and starred Golden Bell Awards winners Yu An-shun and Yang Li-yin, along with Golden Harvest Awards Best New Performer Hu Jhih-ciang and emerging new talent Rimong Ihwar, to unveil the hidden story of a family. In the comedy Marry My Dead Body, director Cheng Wei-hao brings together Austin Lin and Greg Han, as a couple that transcends the boundaries of living, death and gender. Both films are rooted in the concept of “family”, but display a remarkable diversity of Taiwan cinema in between realism and fantasy.
Chan Ching-lin expresses his deep gratitude and surprise to present his second feature as the Opening Film at Golden Horse. Cheng Wei-hao’s work The Tag-Along was selected as Closing Film for Golden Horse in 2015. With his latest work to return, Cheng noted, “it is an honor to be selected as Closing Film again, and I’m both excited and anxious. I hope this film, quite different from my previous works, will bring laughter and tears to the audience.”
Chan Ching-lin’s works have mostly fixate on the living of the underclass in Taiwan society, and he was nominated for Golden Horse Awards Best Short Film and Best New Director with A Breath from the Bottom and The Island that All Flow By, respectively. His second feature film Coo-Coo 043 was selected into 2021 Golden Horse Film Project Promotion WIP Projects. It depicts how a family relying on racing pigeons was shaken due to the economic pressure, the restless youth and the disappearance of the son. The arrival of a drifting youngster brings changes to their lives, while a storm is approaching as well…
Cheng Wei-hao has accumulated accolades and acknowledgement with his varied creations, from the Golden Horse Awards Best Short Film The Death of a Security Guard, to his features The Tag-Along, Who Killed Cock Robin, and The Soul. His latest work Marry My Dead Body blends supernature, detective and comedy: the policeman Greg Han mistakenly picked up a red envelope on the ground when he was investigating a case, and in turn forcedly being married to Austin Lin, a gay ghost died of injustice. If a living man and a ghost can get married, sexuality won’t be the hurdle to stop them from working together to solve the case and chase down the criminal. So, a ridiculous journey with laughs and tears begins.
The 2022 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival will be held between November 2nd and November 20th. Stay tuned for more updates and festival lineups.
