While waiting for the night rehearsal of the ballet Swan Lake, accomplished ballerina Marie, played by Maj-Britt Nilsson, under the dreamlike pull of memory impulsively revisits the island of her youth and recalls her first and only love Henrik. Years ago, they met and fell in love, but it eventually left Marie haunted by her tragic youthful affair. Summer Interludepresents a reverie about life and death that unites Bergman's love of music, theater and cinema, and thus is considered a film of his creative turning point.
